NextHouse Designer – Joel Turkel
Born in Seattle and raised in British Columbia, Canada, Joel earned a Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Architecture in 1993 from the University of Manitoba and a Masters of Architecture in 1999 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was named the Ann Beha Traveling Fellow. He is a recipient of the Marvin E. Goody prize in Architecture for his work on pre-fabricated residential building systems.

Before joining Empyrean, Joel worked under architect Fernando Domeyko-Perez and with several international groups including the Aga Khan Program in Islamic Architecture in both India and Syria; the GTZ in Ethiopia; and the Space In and In-Between Workshop under the direction of architects Frank Gehry, Steven Holl and Fumihiko Maki.

Joel is a frequent critic at architectural schools throughout the United States and, in addition to design work at Empyrean, holds a concurrent position as Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT.
